The Caligo uranus, commonly known as the Uranus owl butterfly, is a large and striking butterfly species native to Central and South America, particularly found in rainforests and tropical lowlands. It belongs to the Caligo genus, which is known for its members' prominent eye-like markings on their hindwings that resemble owl eyes—an effective form of mimicry used to deter predators. The upper side of the Caligo uranus wings is a rich bluish-purple, contrasting with the dull brown and tan underside that carries the large eyespots. With a wingspan reaching up to 13–15 cm (5–6 inches), this butterfly is both impressive in size and appearance.
Despite its bold colors, the Uranus owl butterfly is crepuscular, meaning it is most active during dawn and dusk. This behavior helps it avoid many of the diurnal predators that would otherwise be drawn to its vivid upper wing patterns. The larvae feed primarily on banana plants (Musa species), which are common in their native habitat and sometimes make them agricultural pests. Adults feed on rotting fruit rather than nectar, further distinguishing them from many other butterflies. Their slow, deliberate flight and cryptic resting posture help them blend into their environment when not flying, making them a fascinating example of both beauty and evolutionary adaptation.

HOW WE GRADE OUR LISTINGS (SPECIMENS)
As Insect specimens are natural products, some are bred and some others caught in wild, the quality can vary greatly.
The guide below explains the grading used for specimens in our listings.
A1 No visible imperfections, both antennas, no tearing, scratches or missing part of the wings (or as perfect as you could expect from wild caught specimens), with exception of some leg damage.
A1- Very minor damage, normally restricted to antenna damage or antennae attached separately in the envelope.
A- These specimens have minor damage, such as antenna damage, or minor flight wear such as small scratches, minor sale damage, some minor fraying/chipping around the edges of the wings.
A2 More significant damage, such as major flight wear, small rips, small pieces missing from the wings, damage to the thorax or abdomen.
B or Second Grade These specimens have similar damage to A2 specimens, but to a more significant degree. Usually used as parts replacement or art work material
